The Origin of Our Name
The Royal Eagle Fund takes its name from one of the most enduring and powerful symbols in Mesoamerican history—the Golden Eagle, known in Nahuatl as cuāuhtli. This eagle, fierce and regal, plays a central role in the founding myth of the Aztec Empire.
According to ancient prophecy, the wandering Mexica people—ancestors of the Aztecs—were told by their gods to search for a sign that would reveal where they were destined to build their new city. That sacred vision was said to appear as a golden eagle perched atop a cactus, grasping a serpent in its talons, rising above the waters of a lake.
After a long and arduous journey, the Mexica beheld this exact image on a small island in the middle of Lake Texcoco—a location that would become Tenochtitlan, the legendary capital of the Aztec Empire and the future site of modern-day Mexico City.
This vision of the eagle and serpent would become more than just a prophecy—it would become a national emblem, emblazoned on the Mexican flag, enduring through centuries as a symbol of vision, perseverance, and sovereignty.
